EVALUATION- QUESTION 6: Audience Feedback


The first Wordle displays the positive feedback from our class. I am pleased that there are more positive comments rather than negative. We wanted to produce an "Ominous" atmosphere which was mentioned in one of the comments. They seemed to like the CCTV footage as it was believable and fitted within the sequence well. Also, they like the range of camera shots as it built tension successfully. 




This Wordle presents the negative feedback. I was surprised with a few of the comments from the negative feedback. For example, the word "rushed" is something I wouldnt use to describe the titles of our our sequence as we sent a large amount of time on them. However, I can understand the "dark" use of "lighting" as we had problems with this from the beginning.

On the 5th April our film had a cinematic screening at 'Screen on the Green'. After veiwing everybody's thriller openings and seeing the amazing amount of diverse ideas throughout, we filmed a few members of the audience to give us thier thoughts on our opening. Most of them loved the use of CCTV and were not expecting the static at the end. It created the atmopshere we were looking for. Which was creepy, eerie and tension building.

This feedback has helped me to realise that our sequence wasnt perfect. However, I'm pleased with the overall comments as people seemed to like the idea and said it was thrilling. Also, we achieved our aim of creating an eerie, tension building atmosphere as the audience seemed really captivated with our opening.

EVALUATION: Questions 4 and 5

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/adress you audience?




Through researching many other student films on Youtube, I have come accross some really amazing low budget pieces produced by students. Some have won many awards through Film Festivals, but this could only have been achieved through proper distribution of the movie. For example our movie, 'Provocation',  is going to be distributed through booking a local cinemaand on the 5th April all our media groups will be going to see them in on the big screen.



Screen on the Green is where we invited our friends and others to come and see our movie. We got some really useful feedback afterwards.








Our Thriller opening is a low budget student movie and so we have decided on trying  to distribute it to a large audience. Therefore, we have put it up on Vimeo via YouTube. Our video is being produced by an independent, low budget production called Candi Studios and will aim to get around 200 copies on DVD release.

 

Also, we are uploded a link to our wall on Facebook to get more feedback from others. These are just a few ideas of how we are distributing our opening sequence through the use of the Internet and its many options.

 We got some amazing feedback froom our friends and overall it was the majority of people we had aimed it at for our target audience.The feedback was quite positive, it seemed as though people really were intrigued and wanted to see more. Which was the aim of our thiriller opening overall. I am quite happy with the comments as the I feel we have achieved our aim in creating an gloomy, dark, tension building atomosphere.



Through distributing our media product this way we will hopoefully get more publicity through our friends telling others. Facebook is just one of the many social networking sites that can be used to help distribute our movie.






Below is a student movie called 'Memories' that recieved 40,639 veiws on YouTube and won an award for it's production. I loved the use of camera shots, such as, close ups whilst he was reminising on old memories of his life. I also like the lighting and use of overlapping images to convey his memeories as it looked quite professiinal for a student film. It all linked and worked really well. I can see why it got so many veiws and won an award.

 





Here are a few of the comments posted on youtube about the movie. It seems that people really liked it any found it intriguing. Alot of people seemed to enquire about the camera and setting which shows that it has inspired others to get creative.












We wanted to find other ways of distributing our product on the internet. So we thought of YoutTube as it is one of the main sites that people use nearly everyday and would be an easy tool to get the distribution of media product flowing.

EVALUATION- Question 6 - Audience feedback and comments

We recieved some feedback from our class. As they watched our thriller opening they wrote some comments on pieces of paper, leaving some positive and negative feedback.



Positive Feedback


Our main aim was for there to be an ominous atmosphere, and one of the good feedback that we got was the ominous atmosphere, so thankfully we achieved this aim. Most people mentioned the CCTV frame and said that is was very effective. They also mentioned the variety of camera shots which was good since we took a lot of consideration into the camera shots. 

Negative Feedback


We had some trouble with the lighting in the beginning, so it wasn't very surprising to hear that some people thought the lighting should have been brighter. It was, however, surprising to hear that some people felt the titles were a bit rushed and unorganised as we spent the majority of our time on them. Some people also felt that the music was a bit plain.

I also used Facebook as a method of distribution and a way to get more audience feedback. So far it has 17 "likes" and the comments are mainly positive and most of them mentioned the CCTV frame that we used. 4 people said that they wanted to see more which is very good as the opening to a film should always be gripping in order to make you want to continue watching.                                                       


The feedback I received is all by 15 to 18 year olds, it is a small portion of our target audience age range but it shows that 15 to 18 year olds really do enjoy the thriller genre, and will therefore enjoy 'Provocation'.

Our film had a cinematic screening along with other films today at 'The Screen on the Green'. We saw peoples reactions and it was how we had intended for it to be. There was a suspenseful atmosphere and from the feedback we got at the end of the screenings, people seemed to enjoy it. All of them mentioned the CCTV frame and said that it was really good as it made it look like she (Francesca) was being watched.

EVALUATION: Question 3

 Who would be the audience for your media product?


The target audience for our movie is mainly women over 15+ but I think more men would watch it rather than women because they usually do. However, we wanted to gve a wider audience a chance to veiw our movie. Whereas, the film that inspired us the most, 'Captivity' was 18+ we felt that our thriller should be open to a much more broader audience market. As during resaerch we discovered that 15 years olds are annoyed that they do not get to see thriller movies because of the age barrier.

I have taken a few photos displaying the contents of a 17 year old's handbag and a profile of herself.  Her name is Sarah Hutchings and her usual hobbies are reading, going to the cinema, shopping (mainly in H&M) and listening to music in her spare time. In between going to work and balancing college life whilst learning to drive all at the same time.

The contents of her handbag included:
  • A bag of crisps
  • H&M recipet
  • Chewing Gum
  • Her purse
  • Cosmetics
  • Her house Keys
  • Ipod






Here is a photo of her DVD collection with many CD's as well. She has over 100 in this case and I think its running out of space. Her favourite genre is horror but likes the odd thriller once in a while.










This is a close up of a section of her dvd case she has many horror films such as, 'Saw' and 'No Vacancy'. Which illustrates that she is the perfect target audience for our movie.

EVALUATION: Questions 4 & 5 - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?


Here is a trailer called 'Genesis' made by AS Level students. This trailer has had 19,815 views so far on YouTube. I really like the camera shots/angles, particularly the high angle shot of the girl walking through the forest showing that there is a dominating presense watching her. Also the mise en scene adds to the suspense as it is creepy, for example the two settings being a church and a forest. Overall I'd say that this is a very good and, by the looks of things, a popular and well distributed trailer.

I imagine that the AS media students that created this trailer would have advertised it on social networking sites, such as Facebook, in order to introduce it to a wider audience. I think most of the distribution was probably done on YouTube, as it has 19,815 views so far. Well, I have also adopted these methods of distribution and hope to follow in the same path as 'Genesis' by getting a large view count on YouTube and get a wider variety of audience.
Our thriller opening is a low budget student video that has been released onto Vimeo, embedded onto our blog, uploaded onto YouTube on an account that we made specifically for the film, and has also been shared on Facebook for additional audience feedback; these are a few examples of methods of distribution and marketing in an attempt to reach a global audience. It was produced by an independent, low budget production company called 'Candi Studios' and will get a DVD release of 200 copies.

Our film will have a cinematic screening along with other groups films at 'The Screen on the Green' on Tuesday 5th April. We will collect feedback and see if our aim of creating a gloomy and suspenseful atmosphere will be achieved.

EVALUATION: Question 3 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

The target audience for our thriller opening is mainly teenage girls/young women, ranging from to the age of 15 to 40. This wide range of ages, starting from 15, makes it possible for more people of different ages to watch the film in the cinema. Although our thriller inspiration 'Captivity' has an age certificate of 18, we decided that making our thriller's age certificate a 15 would make it more appealing to a wider audience.









This review of 'Captivity' that was made by someone called Jared shows how the film may appeal to men, as he says "I like seeing Elisha Cuthbert, she was really really hot in the film". This shows that an attractive woman in a film will attract a male audience. Thus, our thriller will potentially be appealing to men also.


I have taken a few photos, depicting the contents of our film's typical audience members handbag. Her name is Melissa Sozen, a 23 year old accountant. Her hobbies include reading, watching DVD's, shopping (alot) mostly in River Island, and the one she enjoys the most, going to the cinema. She leads a pretty hectic lifestyle, so she does her best to squeeze her hobbies into her free time. Melissa goes to the cinema quite frequently with her friends and family, her favourite genres include horror, thriller and action.




In her handbag there is:
  • cinema tickets
  • a thriller book
  • cosmetics
  • her phone
  • keys
  • her purse


She owns over 90 DVD's which she watches whenever she is too tired or has not got enough time to go to the cinema.












These are a few of the books she owns, generally within the horror and thriller genre.

EVALUATION: Question 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main character of our thiller opening shows some similarities with the main character of the film 'Captivity' starring Elisha Cuthbert. The similarities include the fact that they are both young which expresses their vulnerability, and that they look similar with their clothing and blonde hair (which conveys the blonde stereotype), including the obvious similarity of them both being held captive with no idea why or how they ended up there. The camera shot (mid shot) is similar but the angles are different. The mise en scene is similar, with the beds and the pillows.










In these two images the camera angle is the same but the camera shots are different, the top image is a distant mid shot and the bottom image is a close mid shot. The mise en scene is different. The dim lighting sets the tone and tells you that something is about to happen. It portrays a gloomy atmosphere which is why we chose to use dim lighting.














The social group that our thriller opening represents is mainly teenage girls, as the main character is a teenager herself. It may also attract the attention of teenage boys because of the fact that the film has an attractive main character, just like in 'Captivity' and many other films. 'Captivity' has been a large influence on our thriller opening considering the fact that there are many similarities with the film and our thriller opening.

EVALUATION: Question 1 - In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?




Both begin with the most important titles over a black screen, such as the producers/production company. This is how most films start, so we have used forms and conventions of other films in our one.










They are both sleeping and wake up to find that they are lying in an unfamiliar place. By using a pillow and a bed cover we have challenged the forms and conventions of other thriller films, as in the shot from 'Cube', the man is lying on the floor with no pillow or bed cover.













Extreme close up on both characters faces as they attempt to regain full conciousness expresses their vulnerability due to the situation that they are in. This shows that we have used forms and conventions of other films in ours.  











Both shots show the character as they regain conciousness and realize the situation they are in. The settings of both openings are grubby and dark, creating a gloomy atmosphere, which is generally a convention of most thriller films.











Bloody hands add to the ominious and gloomy atmosphere, creating a sense of terror in the audience. Blood is a convention that is used in almost every thriller film.








They both stand up to try and understand how and why they ended up there. Shot types are different, she is shown in a mid shot and he is shown in a low angle long shot, perhaps suggesting that he has a more dominant role in 'Cube' than she does in our film. The only mise en scene in the shot of our film in the plain setting (garage) which keeps the attention on her at all times, it is however the complete opposite for 'Cube', the extravagant setting keeps the audiences attention on the setting. I think 'Cube' has challenged the forms and conventions of most other thriller films by using an extravagant setting.








She is shown in a mid shot and he is shown in a close up. By the expressions on their faces something seems to have caught their attention. This is a convention that is generally used in most thriller films; showing the character reaction to something significant, then revealing what that "something" is.












In this shot it shows what caught their attention. They both touch it and try to come to terms with why it is there. They are different shot types as the one from our thriller opening is a blurry point of view shot, and the one from 'Cube' is a low angle mid shot. A blurry point of view shot is a convention that most thriller films use, as it allows the audience to see from the characters perspective.











In this shot they are both shown in a mid shot as they are looking around the room and trying to familiarise themselves with their unknown surroundings; a convention that creates suspense as the audience, along with the character, is introduced to the setting.
